Favorite SF Restaurants
Posted by Stuart at 01:04 PM on March 20, 2005Last week, my good friend Jimmy left a comment on this website asking about my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. It's been almost three years since I lived there, but I could still remember a few of my regular hangouts.
So, since I don't have anything interesting to share about my life in Thailand (I've been working a lot, and that doesn't make for very interesting reading) I thought I'd talk about my favorite restaurants in San Francisco.
As I wrote in reply to Jimmy: A walk down Mission or Valencia streets will find a huge number or cheap and delicious taquerias. My favorite Mexican place is La Rondala on Valencia and... 20th? My favorite Italian is a small place called Jackson and Fillmore. It is located (beleive it or not) on the corner of Jackson and Fillmore. For Vietnamese, I liked the Slanted Door. It used to be in the Mission, but I think that it has a new location in the Ferry Building now.
At least those are my resonably priced favorites, as I remember them from three years ago. Of course there is a lot of good restaurants at the top-end of the market, but I don't know which ones are the best these days.
Assuming my friends from San Francisco still read this website and would be willing to respond, I'm curious to hear what restaurants make everyone else's "favorite" list.
For splurge dinners: Boulevard!
Here are 2 good ones:
Deep Sushi (30th/Church)
The House (Grant/Columnbus)
well, well, well...lots of places:
favorite Latin: Destino, great Peruvian food; Market@Valencia
favorite Meat place: Espetus, Brazilian Churascaria (ok, I'm sure I'm missing a couple of R's in there); Market@Gough
favorite Italian: Michelangelo, Columbus@Union (?), ok, it's really the big bowl of gummibears after dinner
...and a never ending list of other great restaurants: A16, Bistro Aix, Absynthe, Paul K, Cafe Tiramisu, Woodward Garden, Zuni, Mekka, Kokkari, Delfina, ...
San Francisco is a wonderful place to eat. SO many good options! Here are a couple of my favorites:
German: Suppenkuche - Laguna and Hayes
Japanese: Mifune - Japantown
Tibetan: Lhasa Moon - Lombar and Scott
It is good to know you like living in Thailand. Since after I retire I plan to live there also. I have been there 3 times and am in love with Thailand.
As far as restaurant reviews. It has been awhile since I have been to S.F. But Orange County has many great places. For Mexican I would pick El Camino Real in Fullerton. It is rumored Kobe Bryant eats there sometimes. Very authentic and you may be the only Gringo there.
For Vietnamse the City of Westmister has the best selection. Too mamy to mention
Any planning ideas before I move to Thailand would be welcomed. Douglas
