Cutaway in Day Trips
June 28, 2003
The chedi at Nakhon Pathom is the largest Buddhist monument in Thailand. The chedi as it is seen now was built in 1860, but it was actually built over an existing Khmer-style prang which was built in the early 11th century (which in turn, was built over a dome that was built in the 6th century. Wow!) In any case, on one of the walls in an adjoining wat, there is this painting that shows what the chedi would look like if cut in half -- showing the now-hidden white Khmer prang.
