Klang Wiang Chiang Rai

The pagoda at Wat Klang Wiang in Chiang Rai. Klang Wiang means "City Heart" as the temple is located in the middle of town. It was originally built in 1432. The pagoda marks the spot where a giant tree called Chan Daeng once stood. The tree played an important role in worship ceremonies, but unfortunately it fell during a storm in 1923 and crushed one of the temple buildings. Note the elephants around the base, and the golden Buddhas in each alcove.
