Interview #1
Posted by Stuart at 07:41 PM on September 14, 2002My first job interview in Thailand went very well today. I talked to who may become my new boss at the university. She thought I was perfect for the job, and next week will be talking to her boss, the VP, about hiring me.
The interview went so smoothly that I think I will look into the other schools in Bangkok that also have classes taught in English. The lady I interviewed with today seemed surprised that I wasn't talking to any other schools, so maybe I should do that!
Just went to Bangkok University's website, and ended up answering one of my own questions about the language in Thailand. The Thai language is it's own deriving from several different - Sanskirt, Chinese, Lao, etc.

Yup, that's right, Beth. A lot of words in Thai come from Sanskrit (from India) and some from Chinese. For example, counting from 6-10 in Thai is very similar to Cantonese.
Thai: hok jet baat gao sip
Cantonese: lok jet baat gao sup
(At least that's how I remember it from on one semester of Cantonese a couple of years ago :)
Thai has 44 non-vowel letters but only 20 something sounds. That's because a lot of the letters are only used to spell Sanskrit-derived words.
The Thai language is also very similar to Lao spoken in Laos, especially the dialect spoken in the North (makes sense, huh?)

You never know . . . I just may end up joining you in Thailand, so I might as well brush up on my Thai. hehehehehe. However, it would be cool to know some of the language for when I do come and visit.
