Son of a Dragon

mdf282930.jpg"SIT TBOW, Cambodia (Reuters) - Cambodians are flocking to see a three-year-old boy they believe was the son of a dragon in a former life because his best friend is a four-meter-long python."

It is hard for me to imagine what it would be like to live a life where I would actually believe that a 3-year-old kid was the son of a dragon in a former life.

On the other hand, you have to admit that it is a little strange why the kid likes the snake so much, and why the snake hasn't eaten him yet. "Son of a dragon" is a fun explanation.

I also wonder what this kid's life will be like. It looks like a path has been selected for him already, as the article states: "His special powers will probably make him a traditional healer at the age of seven."

One of the re-occuring threads in my mind these days concerns the issue of choice. Many lives in Thailand are pre-decided. To grow up with incredibly close family ties and work in the family business for the rest of your life is the most common example. I, on the other hand, have almost infinite choice, and well into my fourth decade of life I have no idea what I am doing or where I am going.

Not that I am really complaining, just observing (as usual).

Greetings from Atlanta, Georgia, USA....

I could find no other way to contact the author of this page, so my apologies.

I have used only a couple of internet cafes downtown, so you probably have a better idea than I do: Could you tell me, how hard would it be for a farang to nose out an Internet cafe where he could plug his laptop in and quickly upload 10 or 20mb of data?

The cafes I used did not seem to have horribly fast connections, and I'm wondering how much of a hassle it is for you to upload photographs on your travels.

Thank you in advance for the tips. Leaving for a two month stint in BK in one week.

Unbelievable!! I too can not imagine living in a culture, or rather growing up in a culture that does believe in reincarnation. However, this child does have a special gift, obviously. :-) Similar to the horse whisperers .... some have gifts that are truly unexplainable, and can only be gifts.

Love you!!

Nick,

Sorry it has taken me a while to respond. Perhaps you are already in Bangkok?

In any case, I upload my pictures with the fast connection from work. You are right in that most of the Internet cafes in Bangkok are painfully slow, even if they have a "High Speed!" sign out front.

There are a few Wi-Fi locations sprouting up here and there that might be the answer you are looking for. There's a rumor that the Apple Store has set up a network in the Siam Discovery shopping center. Also, according to a an article in the Bangkok Post there are Wi-Fi locations in Gaysorn Plaza and Central Lad Prao. Check out the article for more info.

Good luck!
