Slow Motion
Posted by Stuart at 08:56 AM on December 02, 2003I just updated my website with stories from my weekend get-away to Laos. What a great trip. The only bad part was getting back to Bangkok 2 hours late. At least I had interesting things to look at out the window, unlike Piyawat who was stuck at the train station waiting for me. What a good friend he is! (Sorry, Piyawat!)
But the train must have influenced me, because all day yesterday I felt like I was moving in slow motion. Sometimes I feel like I really could live that slow-motion "drinking beers watching the sunset" life. But then again, I think I would miss the energy and excitement of the city.
So for now, we will save slow-motion for the weekends.
Interesting... I remember the coffee shop in Hillsboro Village, but I don't remember that conversation.
Your comments get me thinking, though. I think that over the past year, I have learned to slow down a bit, learned not to be so stressed out all the time. But at the same time I still try to fit in as much "living" as possible. For example this month I have gone on two trips: one to Laos and Chiang Mai and I leave for the US this weekend. Go go go go go! hehe.
But I agree, running a Tiki Hut Store would get a bit boring eventually. One thing I have definitely learned over this past year: exotic and exciting eventually becomes normal and ordinary.
Funny that I read this entry today, after sharing with someone the story of Christmas in Tennessee the first year I was there.
We were all in Hillsboro Village at a kitchen store, Dad and I were sipping on coffee and talking with the shop owner, a man in his mid 70s while his son(s) were running the shop.
We walked out of the store, and you turned to me and said, "Beth, are you ever in a hurry for anything?" hehehehe .... and funny thing is that was not the first time you had made that comment to me. HAHA!!!! :-)
The conversation that followed was you and me dicussing the differing views of "hurry and see and do as much as you can and take it all in as much as possible because life is too short" compared to "casually enjoy and take in every moment at a slower pace, because life is too short" (or something very close). Gee - I wonder which view was whose???? HAHAHAHAHA!!!
I will have to say, with some confidence, that drinking beer, watching the sunrise and sunset, while I run my Tiki Hut of a store on the beach in some exotic location, year round for the rest of my life, would in fact be a bit too slow.
Love you!!
