Londoner Pub on Sukumvit 33
Posted by Stuart at 09:57 PM on May 12, 2004Tonight, my friend Terry met me for dinner and beers at the Londoner Pub on Soi 33. (I had mentioned this soi a week or so ago when I wrote about Mojo's BBQ). Terry is in the middle of applying for a job at my school and so we figured we talk shop over ahan farang (western food).
But this time we were doing the pub food and homebrewed beer thing. The food, was... well, I don't think I will be going back any time soon. It was ok, but very expensive. Dinner and dessert for two with a few beers set us back 1500 baht (US$37) which is outrageous considering my lunch cost 25 baht.
The only good thing about it (besides good conversation, of course) was the apple pie. I can't believe that I am actually typing this, but I think it was the best apple pie I have ever eaten in my life. Maybe they put something extra in the beers to make me lose my mind, but wow, what a great pie!
When I saw Soi 33 and Brit Pub, I thought you were talking about the Bull's Head. It's in the same area and pretty nice too.
And I kinda agree with lynn, 1500 for 2 dinner and some beers is actually quite ok, esp. for that part of the city :)

Hi Chris and Lynne.
I don't mind spending money on good restaurants, but once the price per dish is ten times what I buy on the street (and street food in Thailand is soooooo good!) then my standards become much higher.
For example, last year my friends and I dropped a lot of cash at the Vertigo restaurant on top of the Banyon Tree Hotel. But, the money was well worth it considering the great food, the amazing views from the world's second highest outdoor restaurant and who we saw there (hehe).
In this case of the Londoner Pub, however, the food was "just ok" (except for that heavenly apple pie!) and the wait staff was not very nice. Apparently they have been hanging out with farang too much and have lost the ability to smile.
But, based on Chris' recommendation, I will be sure to check out the Bull's Head. I'm always looking for a great night out that's worth the money!
I went to the Banyan Tree Hotel a couple of months ago to eat at the Rom Sai Restaurant on the first floor, but unfortunately didn't get to stop by Vertigo. Again, refer to miserly college student wallet above. ;P Hehe, but a few of my friends have eaten there before and, like you Stuart, said that it was sooo worth it for the fabulous view of the city... and important ppl that they saw there. ;)
I think I'll take Chris' recommendation and try out Bull's Head too!
btw, I just read your Vertigo entry, and wow, you got to brush up against royalty? You lucky bum!
hi guys,
I moved to Bangkok just over a year ago. I watched England win the world cup and the atmosphere was awesome. It has since become my local and I am there for B.O.G.O.F (buy one get one free) Wednesdays and a roast dinner lunch every Sunday. If my team (Come on you Spurs) are playing its the best place to catch a game... anyway... apart from that, Bed Club is pretty cool, Q Bar is overated.. Cheers, Jamie
1500 might be a wee bit too steep for my miserly college student wallet, but if that apple pie is truly to die for, then I think I'll have to stop by the Londoner Pub and check it out!
BTW, speaking of ye olde Brit pubs, I was wondering if you know whether the Irish pubs Shenanigans and O'Reilly's are any good?
