Balcony Before and After

Posted by Stuart at 01:44 PM on July 25, 2005

Now... coming back to the present day...

While I was reminiscing/analyzing my past over the last few days, I have also started thinking about the future -- namely the renovations that I want to do to my condo. An interior designer friend came over to the condo a couple of nights ago and we talked about all the options.

And let me tell ya, there are a LOT of options. I want to change something in every single room. At the very least, the 10 year old stained and faded wallpaper has to go. But what will replace it? More wallpaper? Paint? But what color?

We have also been buying a lot of plants lately. Our first attempt at filling the balcony with plants was a complete failure. All of the twelve pots of bamboo died almost immediately. So now we are trying other options, including growing flowering vines over the dead bamboo stalks.

So far it's working out nicely. Or, you can judge for yourself with the before and after shots below. (You can click on each for a bigger version.)

I have a feeling this won't be the last before and after post I make this year.

Certainlythe "after" picture looks much better. That bamboo comment was priceless, you sound like my grandmother talking on her garden.

Oh WOW!!! That is very impressive transformation you did. Your plants look more alive aspiring than the dead bamboo you mentioned earlier :-)

Indeed, the patio looks much more inviting on the after photo. What is the floor covering in the after photo?

The success to keeping plants alive is to make sure that you choose the right plant for the place: amount of sun it will receive per day, the climate, and the heat. Also, make sure that you know when to water and how much to water. Both extremes, too much water and too little water, can be deadly to plants. Also, check into when to fertilize and how much to fertilize. A last suggestion is to find out when to trim and how to trim. On flowering annuals and perennials, if one snips the bloom off just after the bloom has withered, another bloom will sprout.

Nice upgraded Balcony. The pink flowers in the picture, I have them at home in Ca, LB. They are great all year round and very tolerable to heat and humidity, which fits the climate in BKK. We have heat wave in So.Cal this week from the remnant of Hurricane Emily in the Gulf. Swealtering hot!.
