I Love Macs But Not Dreamhost or Dentists

Posted by Stuart at 05:08 PM on February 27, 2007

Here's a little round-up of a few things that have been going on this week. First of all, my friend Francois is in town from San Francisco. He brought me a new Mac Mini computer that I had ordered from the Apple website. I had to buy a new computer because I just hired my first employee this week. I also bought a new 22" widescreen monitor. (The new employee will get the old computer and monitor, by the way!)

So, yeah, you read correctly, it's official now, there are two people working at my company. I ended up hiring a former student of mine from the University. I was lucky enough to run into her recently, and she suggested that I hire her. Eventually I agreed that was a pretty good idea. But it's a bit scary, too, to be honest. Now I am responsible for the livelihood of TWO people.

My new Mac Mini is up and running with no problems. This was the first time I was moving from an old Mac to a new one, and so it was the first time I was able to use the Migration tool. And let me tell you, it was awesome. I just connected the two computers through Firewire and presto, all applications, files, users, and all settings are auto-magically transfered to the new computer. That cool little feature saved me hours of work.

The 22" monitor is awesome as well. The directions for "Auto Installation of Drives" on Windows XP called for inserting the CD and making six clicks. There were also instructions on how to change the resolution of the display for Windows through the Control Panel. There were no instructions for what to do on the Apple. So I just plugged everything in, and it "just worked". The resolution was automatically adjusted correctly and the screen looks fantastic.

Have I told you lately how much I love using Apple computers these days?

In other news, you might have noticed that my website has been up and down for the last few days. It's all the fault of my less-than-stellar hosting service: Dreamhost. I used to recommend them, but now I never would. As soon as the site is back up as normal, I will move this site over to a new host. More details about that to come soon.

Finally, today was a momentous day for me, as just a couple of hours ago I had two teeth pulled. They were the top wisdom teeth -- and had come in with no problems, but they were just too far in the back (and a bit misaligned) to be able to keep them clean. So I had the choice to fill in the cavities (again) or just pull them out. I fearfully chose to pull them,

I thought I'd get this post in, before the pain medication wears off. I wouldn't say it was a pleasant experience to have teeth pulled, but it wasn't terrible. I might feel differently tomorrow, though.

You got your "love" of dentists from me. Had a couple of wisdom teeth pulled my senior year in college. Wasn't too bad.

Mom won't let me get a Mac! :-( But, if I can ever get one, can my stuff on my PC be as seamlessly transfered to the Mac?

Well, Dad is correct - no Mac, that is no Mac until his current computer breaks. I figured that was a fair deal since I can't get a new flat screen TV until the old TV breaks. he he

Now you know the whole truth.

I got an 24" iMac last year. Love it. I'll shut down my only home Windows PC if I ever get all the data transfer over.

I'm pissed at 1and1 web/e-mail hosting now. I thought Dreamhost was real good. Might choose to host it locally in our office when I get to setup a server.

Responsible for other people's family livelihood is interesting. BTW, I'm getting Alex to help me out.

Ohh Stuart. Is MAC really that great! I think i will be a MAC soon. :)
Wanna try the hosting that i'm using? I'm quite appreciate with it.

To Mom: Yes, he should wait until his current computer isn't working as well.

To Dad: I don't know of anything that will "seemlessly" move things from the PC to the Mac, but there are a lot of other ways to do it, like buring CDs with all of your files and copying them to the new computer. Or using an external hard drive to back everything up and then attaching it to the new Mac. (You do have an external hard drive to back up all of your stuff, right? :)

To Francis: I definitely do not recommend Dreamhost. They had a meltdown last year, and I moved half of my sites over to a new host. Now they just had another meltdown and my site was down for over a day. The new host I found seems great -- cheap and reliable. Check out http://www.asmallorange.com

To Jock: What company are you using to host your site?

And to everyone: I am mostly back to normal after the tooth pulling. I was expecting the worst, but it actually wasn't that bad. I wouldn't call it pleasant, but it wasn't completey terrible.

You know those geeks who think many science fictions shows are real? And they constantly look for inconsistencies is the plot or character development? Well, this post has nothing to do with that, BUT, I did notice on your "About" page, at the very bottom, this little tasty morsel: "...is hosted by the highly recommended DreamHost" You're sending mixed signals skippy. ;)

Johan, Good catch! I actually had the recommendation on every single page, but I took it off most of them. I will remove it from the About page now :)

My - what a popular post!! :-)

I too, at some point in time, must have my top two wisdom teeth pulled, for the same reason that you had yours pulled .... difficult to get back there and clean them. Besides, as Tricia said (Bradley-Hess .... she went into dentist practice with her dad) .... Beth, they aren't doing anything, might as well.

Mac-a-doodle so that she-can-doodle too!! We are looking at a second computer. Do we NEED one? No .... will it be a modern convenience? Yes. If you can email Craig, and Craig may email you too, the reasons why you suggest a Mac, that'd be great.

Love you!!
