City Pillars in Chiang Rai

City Pillars Chiang Rai

Me, standing next to the top of the City Pillar in Chiang Rai. Notice all of the smaller pillars around the big one. There are 108 in all, with their height and placement meant to symbolize the Buddhist Cosmology. This site was supposed to be the center of Chiang Rai when it was founded in 1262, but these pillars were built much more recently than that.
