Swatting Butterflies in Nonthaburi

Posted by Stuart at 11:00 PM on September 23, 2002

It's been a few days since I have written anything in this journal, mostly because I haven't really been doing anything exciting here in Bangkok. I spend some time every day online looking for a job. I have also been trying to either swim or go to the gym every day. See, I told you my life wasn't very exciting :)

I had a fun night last night, though. I traveled up to Nontaburi, a neighborhood in northern Bangkok, to visit my friend Tiw. I met him as he was getting off work and he and his co-workers and I walked a block away to a restaurant for some Singha beers and Thai karaoke.

The restaurant they picked was on the corner of a small back alley, and was open-air on both sides. I sat there with them for a few hours, watching the occasional rain shower and the motorcycle taxis splashing through the puddles in the street, feeling the cool breeze blowing through the shop, listening to Thai pop music, drinking my favorite beer, and swatting the mosquitos (which Tiw, with his limited English vocabulary, insisted on calling "butterflies") that were feasting on me.

Ok, so that wasn't necessarily very exciting either. But again, it's the simple pleasures that I have found so enjoyable here...

Simply pleasure, i.e. HUGE differentiation in language - butterflies vs. mosquitos. hehehe. How funny. And what a difference. Man - pesky little creatures those mosquitos are, but what magnificent graces are the butterflies.

Your life is as exciting as you want to make it. Unfortunately, sometimes we have to prioritize and do the most unpleasant things, like look for a job. :-) I'm right there with ya, SG! T-H-E-S-I-S - - - blahck , , , , , I mean YYIIPPEEE!!!

Love ya!

Why does it say that it is 3:55 AM on the 24th of September, when I posted my last comment? Shouldn't it be 3:55AM on the 23rd of September? I thought you were 12 hours behind, not ahead.

Where have I gone wrong???

Posted by: Stuart on September 24, 2002 10:15 AM

Thailand is 12 hours AHEAD of US Central time.

Ahhhhh - now I understand. Well then, I sure was up late this morning, I mean yesterday morning. ohhhhhhhhh. hehehehehe.

Happy 10 months before your half birthday, yesterday!!

Love you!

I meant "today" when I wrote the last entry, but now as I write again, it IS now "yesterday."

Oh gee - how I keep my mind busy during the workday! Pretty pitiful, eh?

Love you!

and in all actuality I was wrong on it all, because TODAY the 25th will be 10 month before your half birthday.

PHEW!

I'm wearing myself out!!

Love you!

Don't hurt yourself, Beth. I would feel so guilty!

You shouldn't feel guilty. Why would you feel guilty? You're silly.

I like Singha.

I wonder if the Masaman curry and Pad Thai I get in Raleigh is remotely authentic.

Colin, I'd be very shocked if it was authentic. Thai food in the US tends to be very sweet and not very flavorful. I don't like curry dishes in the US at all, but here they are delicious. The food here is also definitely spicier. After two months of living here I think my stomach is finally getting used to it.
